Cross the legendary Thorong La Pass at 5,416m on Nepal's most celebrated circuit
The Annapurna Circuit has been drawing trekkers from across the world since it opened in 1980 and for good reason. Over 14 days the trail circumnavigates the entire Annapurna massif, climbing through rhododendron forests, Tibetan-style villages and high alpine terrain before crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416m. The descent into the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, and the walk to the sacred temple at Muktinath give this circuit a depth that pure mountain treks rarely match. One of the most complete trekking journeys in Nepal.
An overland drive from Kathmandu through the Marsyangdi River valley, passing through Besisahar, Khudi and Bulbule. Rice terraces and forested hills line the road. Dharapani sits at the junction of the Annapurna and Manaslu trekking trails and is the gateway to the circuit. Overnight in Dharapani.
The morning walk enters cool rhododendron and pine forest, passing the villages of Bagachap, Danaque and Timang. Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) is visible from Timang on clear mornings. Chame is the district headquarters of Manang with well-stocked teahouses and a hot spring nearby. 5 hours.
