Nine days through rice terraces, volcano sunrises, sacred temples and Balinese villages in Indonesia
This nine-day small group tour covers the Bali most visitors miss when they stay on the beach. Starting in Ubud, the cultural heart of the island, the itinerary works north through the volcano country around Mount Batur for a predawn summit, the black-sand beaches and hot springs of Lovina on the north coast, the sacred water temple of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan and the village markets of Bedugul before finishing in Sanur. A cooking class, a home visit with a local family, snorkelling in Bali Barat National Park and a traditional Balinese ceremony round out a trip that gives you the island properly. Led by a local leader with a small group of like-minded travellers.
Arrive in Ubud, Bali's cultural hub. Meet your group and leader at a welcome meeting in the evening. Time to explore the Monkey Forest or the central market if you arrive early. Overnight Ubud.
Morning visit to the Tegallalang rice terraces, carved in ancient staircase formations around the valley north of Ubud. Return to Ubud for a guided market walk with your leader, choosing fresh ingredients for a Balinese cooking class in the afternoon. Learn to make dishes like sate lilit, lawar and black rice pudding. Overnight Ubud.
