Chitwan National Park is Nepal's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covering 952 square kilometres of sal forest, tall grassland and river floodplain in the Terai lowlands. It is home to over 700 one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gharial and mugger crocodiles, four species of deer and over 500 bird species. This four-day package is based at a jungle lodge on the park boundary and includes two full days of wildlife activities: jeep safari inside the core zone, a dug-out canoe ride on the Rapti River past basking crocodiles, a guided jungle walk and an evening Tharu cultural performance. A natural add-on to any Nepal trekking or cultural itinerary and one of the most memorable four days the country offers.
Drive from Kathmandu (5 hours) or fly to Bharatpur (25 minutes) then drive to the lodge. Afternoon orientation walk in the buffer zone. Briefing on park rules and wildlife. Overnight at jungle lodge.
Early morning jeep safari into the national park. Spend 3 to 4 hours in the core zone tracking one-horned rhinos, spotted deer, wild boar and monitoring for tiger and leopard signs with the naturalist. Return to lodge for lunch. Afternoon dug-out canoe ride on the Rapti River watching mugger and gharial crocodiles on the riverbanks. Evening Tharu stick dance cultural performance at the lodge.
