Nar Phu is a restricted valley branching off the Annapurna Circuit north of Koto that opens into a high Tibetan landscape most Annapurna trekkers never see. The twin villages of Phu (4,080m) and Nar (4,110m) sit in a dry plateau landscape that looks and feels more like Tibet than Nepal. Both villages have been inhabited for centuries by people of Tibetan origin who maintain ancient Buddhist traditions, architecture and festivals in a largely unchanged way. The trek crosses Kang La Pass at 5,320m, a high and dramatic finish that rejoins the main Annapurna Circuit at Ngawal. The combination of restricted valley, ancient villages, wild high-altitude terrain and a serious pass crossing makes this one of the most complete trekking experiences in Nepal for those who want more than the standard circuit.
