Tsum Valley is one of the most remarkable trekking destinations in Nepal and one of the least visited. Tucked between the Manaslu and Ganesh Himal ranges in a remote corner of north-central Nepal, it was a completely closed region until 2008 and still receives a tiny fraction of the trekkers who visit Annapurna or Everest. The Tsum people are of Tibetan origin with their own dialect, festivals and form of Buddhism. The trail passes through ancient monasteries including Mu Gompa at 3,700m and Rachen Gompa, through villages where the way of life has remained constant for centuries, and through a landscape that transitions from subtropical forest to windswept Tibetan plateau. A restricted area permit is required, keeping numbers low and the experience genuinely undisturbed.
